If you’re looking for the perfect way to embrace the New Year, there’s no better way than with a hike up Coumshingaun, one of the most stunning peaks in the Comeragh Mountains. Located here on the Curraghmore Estate in County Waterford, this exhilarating yet easy-to-reach hike offers jaw-dropping views, a healthy dose of adventure, and a full immersion into Ireland’s wild, rugged beauty.
Over the holidays, we invited some of our Legacy Cask Members to join us at Curraghmore, and when we suggested a hike up Coumshingaun, they were all in. There’s something about this place—its beauty, its sense of remoteness—that draws people in, and the excitement was palpable.
Coumshingaun itself is named after the Irish words “com” (meaning hollow or cove) and “singaun” (a small stream or narrow valley). The name perfectly captures the essence of this place: a tucked-away haven, with a stunning corrie lake nestled at the summit. The lake, formed by glacial erosion, sits in a dramatic bowl-shaped valley, surrounded by cliffs that rise up 250-300 meters above the water. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, and the deep blue of the lake only adds to the mountain’s sense of majesty.
Standing at 670 meters (2,198 feet), Coumshingaun is one of the highest peaks in the Comeragh Mountains. But don’t let the elevation fool you—this hike is surprisingly accessible. It’s about 8-10 km round trip, with a moderate climb that’s rewarding without being overwhelming. And when you finally reach the summit, you’re treated to some of the best panoramic views in Ireland. On a clear day, the sweeping vistas stretch from the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the north, across the Knockmealdown Mountains to the west, and all the way to the Waterford coastline to the south. It’s a scene that feels almost unreal—rolling hills, distant peaks, and shimmering waters.
Beyond the stunning views, there’s also something special about the geology of Coumshingaun. The area is part of a cirque, a natural bowl formed by glaciers. These dramatic cliffs and the corrie lake make it one of the most impressive glacial features in Ireland. For anyone with a bit of an interest in geology, it’s a fascinating place to explore.
As you make your way up the trail, the landscape around you is teeming with life. The slopes of Coumshingaun are home to a variety of bird species—think ravens, buzzards, and even peregrine falcons.
